Infinitivo Pessoal - What the funk?

"Infinitivo" is the general condition of the verb, the source of all conjugations. So, when we think of it, we must see two possibilities: "infinitivo impessoal" and "infinitivo pessoal". The first one is the common form used to be a reference for all conjugations. So, "falar", "trabalhar", "fazer", "abrir" are forms of "Infinitivo Impessoal", cos they are not related to any person of the discourse. On the other hand, when you make it personal, "pessoal", you bring conjugations to this original form. Let's observe below

Infinitivo Impessoal                            Infinitivo Pessoal

                                                            TU         NÓS         ELES
Falar                                                 Falares    Falarmos     Falarem
Fazer                                                Fazeres   Fazermos    Fazerem
Abrir                                                 Abrires    Abrirmos      Abrirem

Then, you ask, isn't this contraditory? Yes, it is, and this is the beauty of the language. I've read that this exists only in Portuguese and Hungary. So, for example, I want to say in Portuguese that when we do our job, we make the world better, but I don't want to make it too personal, too attached to the things that are happening and will be for sure. I want it to be theoretical, to reveal the idea, not any commitment. I will say

Ao fazermos nosso trabalho, melhoramos o mundo.

The first sentence just says something that happened and it is happening everywhere, but it doesn't create any attachment between who is saying and what is going on. It's a good way to create evasive discourses. It's just the exposition of some principle or idea. The main characteristic to observe is the use of preposition to start a sentence. When you do this, in general, you will need the "Infinitivo Pessoal".

Para melhorar o mundo, precisamos melhorar as pessoas.
Ao encontrarem os corpos, precisaram de força para começar a operação.
Por esperarmos demais, perdemos o último ônibus.

Go practice!

Probably, one of the first questions of my foreign students. Well, in terms of use, you can take both of them. If I have to make a grammatical statement, I would say "tudo bem" is the best option. Why? Simple. Cos' in the question

TUDO BEM?

We can understand like this

TUDO ESTÁ BEM?

The verb "estar" refers to a condition, is implicit in the context. And when we have a verb, one thing that will modificate it is an adverb, which is the nature of the word "bem", not "bom", this one is an adjective. So, see below.

Eu estou bem
Eu estou bom   -> cos "bem" is modifying the verb "estar"

Eu falo bem
Eu como bem
Eu sei bem o que está acontecendo

In all this statements you have "bem" as a characteristic of the action, the verb. The only exception is the verb "ser", because this one indicates an identification of the subject with the characteristic in a more permanent way. See.

Eu sou bom
Eu sou bem     -> "bom" is what you are, as something that qualifies, not just transitory, more consistent

After sou, é, somos and são you will have adjectives, not adverbs.

Eu sou rapidamente
Eu sou loucamente
Você é pouco para mim.

Now, you ask, "but "pouco" is the opposite of "muito", adverbs of intensity. "Eu como pouco". Not only this, but "pouco" also is related to identification, again, to the verb "ser".

Pouca gente
Pouca coisa
Pouco caso
Poucas pessoas são boas neste mundo.
Ele era pouco para você.

So, if someone calls for "tudo bom", just go for "tudo bom", but if you are writing or want to impress by a formal Portuguese, go matching verbs and adverbs and watch for the verb "ser" and its process of identification between subject and object. Hasta!

Surviving in Rio - Ser and Estar, concepts

So, if you are planning to come to Brazil and you know nothing of Portuguese, well, one hint from a Brazilian teacher: know the difference between Ser and Estar.

SER is the verb that usually gives us the idea of identification or attachment. So, we have

1) Eu sou médico
2) Ele é casado
3) Nós somos generosos
4) Eles são adultos

Just 4 is truly an immutable condition, but the other three have all of them a sense of attachment, duration, a condition not expected to change. If you are married, people will not say it's a transitory situation, although the nature is of that, but people will say as a permanent condition, so it is expected.

Ele é casado
Ele está casado

The same with being generous and a doctor. Of course, you may change everything in your life and prove it is transitory conditions. What we are saying is that the statement in our culture always goes for the most convenient expression. Therefore,

5) Eu estou doente
6) Ele está atrasado
7) Vocês estão errados
8) Nós estamos cansados

This forms of the verb ESTAR are clearly to be seen as transitory as possible. If you are sick, you will not, or you will die, or heal. To be wrong is not a condition, but a consequence of some involvement in a situation. You will only use SER followed by one of this conditions if you want to state that someone is not only late in that situation, for he has been late since always. So, you say

Ele é atrasado

By saying this, you are severely saying that one is fated to be late by his own nature and constitution. But Estar can only be compared when we speak about characteristics or emotions. This verb also refers to location and cannot be confused with Ser for any reason. See

Ele está na praia
Ele é na praia

Eles estão no jogo de futebol
Eles são no jogo de futebol

Nós estamos de folga
Nós somos de folga

Eu estou de jaqueta
Eu sou de jaqueta

No way you can use Ser in those contexts. They only refer to location and situations that you cannot see an identification between the subject and the object or the situation. It is not something one is, but it is around or it is an achievement.

vocabulary:

folga - break from work
jaqueta - jacket
jogo de futebol - soccer match
praia - beach
médico - doctor
casado - married
generoso - generous
adulto - adult
cansado - tired
errado - wrong
atrasado - late
doente - sick

Portuguese for Foreigners - Aulas In Company

In company classes are new stuff for me, since I am more of a friendly group kind of teacher. Besides, out of the strictly formal world we can talk about a lot of things and lessons come more naturally through a more dynamic discourse. Despite of all this points, I am starting to see the good part of teaching managers and executives.

The environment is always comfortable and very out of daily life. It's good for teachers tired of being in the same place all day long. An office has always its particularities. Besides, you can always drink a good coffee and have a serious and, at least at that moment, very focused student. It's a different pace, a different strategy, but the results are the same. As soon as you are able to mix emotion and information, then you can create a strong memory of what is supposed to be learned. The very knowledge will be rooted.

Serge, Thom and B-Lair have been responding even better than I thought it would be, because I was really convinced that business guys were completely out of this planet. With them, I am using English to explain Portuguese. So, I don't translate, I create bridges to make possible for someone who has not a clue of this language to start operating it. Today, just the concepts of being as identity, as some who feels and express physical conditions and as an occupant of a portion of space in time, which are represented by the verbs "SER" and "ESTAR". It was very simple and we went through smoothly.

So, if you want to study in an awesome school, look for us. If you want a private teacher, look for me. Até!
